Rail Baltica station at the international airport “Rīga” has prepared three variants of the architectonic solution, that are based on different concepts.
The first – compactness and sunlight, incorporating natural elements, where main facade elements are wood and metal. The second – close connection with the nature, the Baltic Sea surrounded by trees, respecting the traditions of wooden architecture in Latvia, wood is also the dominant facade element. The third is space, transparency and light, the dominant elements – glass and metal.
The architect, Jānis Dripe, emphasizes that new wooden constructions and the plastic facade of the airport station, clearly marks the center of the volume and accents the entrance to the airport, is one good alternative of the project. Viesturs Silenieks, chairman of the board of cyclists’ association, added: “I support the wooden concept, because Latvia must nevertheless signify the world as a country with green thinking, green solutions, highlighting sustainable development. The station located at the international airport must be as Latvian business card.”
By the end of this year, the management of the Riga Airport and the European Railway Line (EDzL) will choose the most visually appropriate and functionally best solution.
