Nordic Home’s Student Flats project provided 37 much needed studio apartments for students in central Bristol. However, far from the stereotype of student housing being cheaply constructed and light on design, Nordic Home’s Bristol project strived to both respect the surrounding area and provide high quality accommodation. Indeed, the project was the winner of an environmental award from Bristol Civic Society in 2013.
The site for the project lies in the centre of Bristol and within a conservation area. As a result, in terms of the quality of the design and the materials used, Nordic Homes had to – indeed was happy to – adhere to exacting standards. The resulting development features roof tiles that match those found in surrounding buildings, timber sash windows and Bath stone on the ground floor level.
The site of the project was also extraordinarily difficult, located on an important city-centre thoroughfare, on a steep slope and flanked on all sides bar the street by existing historic buildings. Indeed, there was no spare land at all available itself to make way for site accommodation or for deliveries.
Given the difficult site and the use of specially made and difficult to source materials, the speed at which the Bristol project was completed – just 12 months – was remarkable. It was also essential if the client were to be able to start making a return on its investment as quickly as possible as, come what may, students were arriving in September 2012, making the completion deadline immoveable.
The Bristol project also demonstrates that the company is able to achieve modern environmental standards while working with historical architectural forms.
