Completed in September 2013, Nordic Home’s St. Augustine development comprises accommodation for students at Plymouth University – just a 15 minute walk away – with internet access, bike storage and CCTV provided for all residents.
The building is arranged over six storeys which includes ten flats and 79 studio apartments. As a result of Nordic Homes’ modern construction techniques, St Augustine was completed in just over 12 months, in time to accommodate its first students at the start of the current academic year.
Indeed, the St. Augustine development allowed Nordic Homes to demonstrate its promise that shorter build periods can be delivered, even on such a substantial project. According to Nordic Homes’ Projects Director, Ivo Pilkis, the company was able to cut the build period on the project by as much as 33% compared to traditional construction methods.
“With regards to the speed of construction, I can say that it is the way forward,” he says. “With traditional construction you have to contend with the weather and the management of sub-contractors on site. “St Augustine only took a year to build and I would say that saved up to six months compared to traditional methods of construction.”
However, the speed at which the St Augustine development was completed does not mean that sacrifices had to be made in terms of build quality. In fact, the project achieved impressive accreditation on energy efficiency, air-tightness and sound insulation, with solar panels on the roof providing a significant amount of the building’s energy needs.
