A walk through of luxury modular hotel projects of last few years

Recently, there has been significant interest and development in high-quality prefabricated modular hotels, which offer several advantages over traditional construction methods, including faster build times, reduced costs, and consistent quality. Nordic Homes team has taken the time to find such hotels and highlight them here:

The use of timber frame construction in prefabricated modular hotels offers significant sustainability benefits, aligning with the growing trend towards eco-friendly and efficient building practices. Here are some key insights into this sustainable construction approach:

  1. Sustainable Materials and Low Carbon Footprint: Timber is a renewable, durable, and carbon-neutral building material. Using timber in construction can significantly lower the embodied carbon of buildings compared to traditional materials like steel or concrete. Timber frames are designed and manufactured in controlled factory settings, reducing waste and ensuring precise construction, which further minimizes environmental impact (RPS Group).

  2. Efficiency and Waste Reduction: Prefabricated timber structures are highly efficient in terms of both time and cost. The controlled environment of factory production ensures high-quality construction with fewer errors, leading to faster assembly on-site and reduced construction waste. This method also allows for simultaneous site preparation and module production, significantly cutting down overall project timelines (We Are Mundi).

  3. Design Flexibility and Biophilic Benefits: Timber allows for a wide range of design possibilities and customization options, making it a versatile choice for creating unique and aesthetically pleasing hotel structures. The biophilic properties of wood also promote human well-being by enhancing the connection with nature, which is a valuable feature in the hospitality industry (ArchDaily).

Notable Projects:

  • Explora Lodges, EL CHALTÉN, Argentina: This South American company uses modular design for their lodges, ensuring carbon neutrality and sustainability through partnerships with conservation organizations. Constructed in the wine region of Mendoza, the hotel was literally trucked down to Patagonia in 117 pieces and assembled on stilts to reduce its environmental impact. The result is a modular building that prizes soothing earth tones, clean lines, and “the luxury of the essential.” (Explora).

  • In the Swiss alps with 96 prefab modular rooms stacked on top of each other like building blocks, the Revier Mountain Lodge provides one spectacular alpine setting. To achieve his vision and provide floor-to-ceiling views of the lake from every room, the architects turned to prefabrication for efficiency, speed, and uniformity. (Dwell)

  • Hages Badehotel, Denmark: Utilizing modular techniques, this project preserves the historical aesthetic while delivering modern luxury accommodations. It exemplifies the efficient construction and high-quality results achievable with modular technology The beach hotel is built on stilts to preserve nature and creates a unique hotel experience in an environment where we have taken several initiatives to preserve the area's idyll and wildlife. (Hages).

  • Hotel Jakarta, Amsterdam, Netherlands Completed in 2021, Hotel Jakarta is a prime example of sustainable modular construction. It uses a combination of timber modules and prefabricated elements to create a zero-energy building. The hotel features a tropical garden, emphasizing eco-friendly design and construction practices that minimize carbon footprint and enhance guest experience (Derix).

  • Luxury hotel Höfði Lodge, delivered by Nordic Homes, is set to put small-town Grenivík on the map as a place to stay in North Iceland. The building uses a combination of 52 timber frame modules (45 hotel rooms) stacked up in four floors and prefabricated timber panels filling up the concreate and steel elements. The seaside establishment will pack a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, a barn for horses, two helicopter pads for off-piste mountain skiing, and much more.

In summary, timber frame and hybrid prefabricated hotels offers a sustainable and efficient building solution. It reduces carbon emissions, minimizes waste, and supports rapid and precise construction, making it an ideal choice for eco-conscious hospitality projects.

Overall, modular construction for hotels is gaining traction due to its efficiency, quality control, and reduced environmental impact. These and many more projects highlight the diverse applications and benefits of prefabricated modular technology in the hospitality industry.

Stay tuned for the future updates from Nordic Homes as we are in process to add a couple of notable hotels built in timber prefabricated modular technology soon.
